Messages from Mattingly Center, Inc. Executive Director Barbara Henchey

From the Spring-Summer 2007 newsletter

TAKE ME OUT TO THE BALL GAME! This has been the highlight of my summer. I was asked to accompany a group to Louisville Slugger Field to watch Tim throw out the first pitch. What a thrill. Tim wound up and threw the ball with all his might. The crowd applauded and smiled. Our staff and participants were so proud of Tim. Tim was shaking hands and walking off the field with a smile from ear to ear. This is just one of the many exciting activities our participants do on a daily basis. It always puts everything in perspective for me when I hang with our participants.

I want everyone that contributes to the Mattingly Center and our Foundation to know that your money is well spent. Our transportation budget alone is $15,000 this year. TARC rides have increased and our vans seem to always be breaking down. Not to mention the rising cost of gas. We also defray the cost of many admissions to activities that our participants participate in during the year. One of our donors helped with paying for gas so two of our participants could spend a week in Florida. Another donated the condo. We are always having so many wonderful friends of the Mattingly Center open up their hearts and wallets to support what we do. Thank you to each and every one of you for your support.

The good news is Medicaid. For the first time since I have worked with Kentucky Medicaid they seem to be addressing some of the needs of our participants. There appears there will be a new waiver starting in October that will provide service to individuals who have been on the waiting list for Supports for Community Living (SCL). This waiver will address non-residential needs. It appears that all the other SCL services will be available to an individual. We will be providing the same services - Case Management, Adult Day Health, Respite, Community Living Supports, Supported Employment, Behavior Supports, Physical, Occupational and Speech Therapy - we are providing through our other two waivers. With the new Michelle P (SCL light) waiver we may be able to do Personal Care and Homemaking. We look forward to providing these services to as many of our participants as we can.

God bless America!

Sincerely,

Barbara Henchey, Executive Director
